Cliff Walk guide
A National Recreation Trail between Gilded Age mansions and the open Atlantic — Newport's most beloved free attraction.
About the trail
Cliff Walk stretches 3.5 miles along Newport's eastern shore from Bailey's Beach area to Memorial Boulevard near Easton's Beach. The path weaves between private estate walls and rocky coastline — mansion backyards on one side, ocean on the other.
No ticket or permit is required. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset. It is maintained by the city with occasional storm-related detours.
Trail sections
| Section | Terrain | Cruise-friendly? |
|---|---|---|
| East end (Memorial Blvd south) | Mixed paved and easy | Best starting point |
| Central (Breakers area) | Uneven rocks, some stairs | Most scenic, moderate fitness |
| South end (Bailey's Beach) | Rougher, fewer exits | Only on long unhurried days |
Safety and etiquette
- Stay on the public trail — respect private property boundaries
- Wear grippy shoes; wet rocks are slippery
- High wind days — stay inland on exposed sections
- No bicycles; leashed dogs permitted
- Carry water — limited shade on sunny afternoons
For cruise passengers
Start at the east end near Memorial Boulevard — closest approach from 44 Long Wharf. Walk 45–60 minutes south, then retrace or exit to Bellevue Avenue for a taxi. See Cliff Walk from cruise port for directions.
