Destination guide

The Breakers guide

Cornelius Vanderbilt II's 70-room Italian Renaissance palace — Newport's most visited mansion and the essential Gilded Age experience.

History in brief

The Breakers was completed in 1895 for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, chairman of the New York Central Railroad. Architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the 138,000-square-foot limestone mansion as a summer cottage — the ultimate expression of Gilded Age excess overlooking the Atlantic.

The Preservation Society acquired the property in 1972 after decades of family use. Today it anchors Bellevue Avenue and every first-time Newport itinerary.

What to see inside

  • Dining room and kitchen — scale of entertaining below stairs
  • Second-floor family bedrooms and guest suites
  • Rear terrace — unobstructed Atlantic panorama

Cruise passengers should read The Breakers from cruise port for transfer times and is it worth visiting for honest port-day calculus.
